ACT Statistics Project Bret Beyer Menasha High School
Five day group project (3 or 4 students). • Students use senior class ACT data from your school to perform various statistical calculations and data representations. • Students then compare their results nationally and locally to answer five questions. • Most effective for juniors or seniors that have taken or will be taking the ACT.
Using the data students use graphing calculators to perform the following: • Mean, median, range, standard deviation, variance and percentage statistical calculations • Draw a scatter plot, linear regression line, histogram, box and whisker plots for each gender
The students need to use their results to make comparisons and answer the following questions:
Using the mean and % of graduates tested to explain how the scores in your list of data compared nationally and to the Wisconsin average. Has the mean and the % of graduates taking the ACT changed much over time both nationally and in Wisconsin? • Was there a difference in scores based on gender (male vs. female)? Justify your answer using the box and whisker plots and the mean from each set of data.
3. What is the relationship between G. P. A. and ACT test score? How can you use your linear regression line to predict an ACT score for a given G. P. A. (use an example)? Do exceptions to this relationship exist in your set of data? If yes, why do you think these pieces of data (outliers) do not fit the relationship?
4. Did taking the ACT multiple times yield better scores? Explain and be specific. 5. How does your graduation % and the % of graduates taking the ACT compare to the select WI schools data?
The Conclusion • Discuss the senior class results in comparison to other senior classes in your school, nationally and in within Wisconsin. • Use the histogram and standard deviation to discuss the normal curve. • Use the box and whisker plots and scatter plot to discuss specifics about the data.
