Concentration Camps • Separation into groups as you entered (age, health, and sex) • Unable to do work/weak: Sent to “showers” • Able to do work: Average life span: 3 months )forced labor, brutal treatment, starvation, filth, and disease) • Germany: Largest: Dachau and Buchenwald • Poland: Largest: Treblinka and Aushwitz • At first: Buried their dead in mass graves • Later: Huge ovens to cremate their dead.

Nuremberg Trials: 1945-46 • Full horror of of German concentration camps and Nazi racial purification was revealed to the world. • Hitler was dead and many high-ranking officials had fled to South America. • Many were captured. • International court met in Nuremberg, Germany. • 22 Nazi leaders charged with crimes against peace and humanity. • 12 Sentenced to death • 7 Sentenced to life imprisonment • 3 Acquitted • Court declared the Nazi party a criminal organization
