  1. Ms. Clark’s ClassParent Night 2014-2015 Welcome

  2. Welcome to First Grade! • Welcome Parents! I’m so glad you are here tonight to learn more about how our classroom works each and every day!

  3. All About Me • My background • I grew up in Dardanelle, AR. • I attended the University of Arkansas. • My experience • This is my 11th year teaching. • I have also taught third grade, but first is my favorite! • I love to knit, read, go to the movies, and travel.

  4. This year… • I want your child to LOVE school. • I want your child to grow academically and socially. • I want to see the light bulb go off above their heads and hear the “ah-ha’s.” • I want to work together with you to make these things happen.

  5. Our Day • 8:00: Arrive • 8:15: Calendar • 8:45: Auxiliary Class  • 9:45: Phonics • 10:15: Writing/Unit • 10:50: Lunch • 11:20: Recess • 12:00:: Letter/Language Review  • 12:40: Guided Reading Groups • 1:45: Brain/Snack Break • 2:00: Math

  6. Reading • Small guided reading groups meet with me several times a week. • Groups are based on reading levels. • Expect 1-2 new leveled readers to come home each week. • Read from the bag every night!

  7. Math • In our classroom math instruction uses a hands-on approach combined with practice pages for independent work.

  8. Science • Science is integrated throughout our curriculum. • Some of the topics we cover are: Nutrition, Human Body, Dental Health, Animals, Metamorphosis, Natural Sources of Heat, Light, and Energy, Seasons, Weather, Magnets, Matter, Environment, and the Solar System.

  9. Social Studies • Social Studies is also integrated throughout our curriculum. • Some of the topics we cover are: Christopher Columbus, Voting, Native Americans, Pilgrims, Citizenship, Wants and Needs, Government, National Symbols and Celebrations, Arkansas History, Goods and Services, Careers, Culture.

  10. Phonics • Typically, we will study a new sound/pattern each week. If we need to spend more time on a sound/pattern we will take two weeks. • A spelling test is given each week on Friday, unless noted in that week’s newsletter. • Spelling words are listed in the newsletter each Monday.

  11. Homework • Each week I send home “Homework Opportunities” with your child. These are meant to be tools for you to use to work with your child on the topics we are covering in class. • Other homework items that should be done every night are reading from the leveled readers, reading the Sam passage, and reviewing the sight words for that week.

  13. Classroom Community • Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us enjoy the day and get along with each other. • Our class rules are: • Be respectful and responsible. • Be organized and follow directions. • Use self-control.

  14. Classroom Needs/Wish list • Double Sided Tape • Treasure Box Items • Google Eyes • Post-It Notes

  15. Daily Folder • Make sure to send your child’s folder every day. • Please put any notes for me, absence excuses, field trip permission forms and money, etc… in your child’s folder. • Send money to school in an envelope or baggie. Label it with your child’s name, my name, and purpose for the money.

  16. Transportation • Please send a note or call the office if you need to change the way your child is going home.

  17. SCHOOL HOURS • School is from 8:00-3:20 • Students cannot be dropped off before 7:30 • Morning • First bell rings at 7:55 • Tardy bell rings at 8:00 • Afternoon • Car rider bell rings at 3:10 • Bus rider bell rings at 3:20

  18. BUSES • Your child will not transition to another bus before getting home. • Bus discipline is covered in the student handbook. • Routes 5A, 3A, and 13A will be dropped off around 7:10. • Routes 3B, 5B, and 13B will be picked-up from school around 3:45.

  19. CAR RIDERS • Students must be dropped off and picked-up at the main door. • Traffic Flow must be followed. • We will not release students at the door. • Parents must be in car rider line. • Parents without a car rider tag will be required to come in the building and show ID to pick up their child

  20. CAMPUS VISITS • Visitors are always welcome. • You must check into the office anytime you are on campus during school hours. There are no exceptions.

  21. TARDIES and EARLY EXITS • A student arriving before 9:00 will be counted as tardy. • A student arriving after 9:00 but before 11:30 will be counted as a ½ day absence. • A student leaving after 2:10 will be counted as an early exit. • A student leaving after 11:30 but before 2:10 will be counted as a ½ day absence.

  22. CHANGES IN TRANSPORTATION • Please send a note with your child if they will not be going home their regular way. • If a change needs to be made during the day, the office needs to be notified by 2:30.

  23. Bullying A pattern of fear and intimidation, includes facebook etc, can become school issue even if begun outside of school, will be reviewed on case-by-case basis and disciplined according to handbook.

  24. Review of Smart Core Curriculum Policy • Smart Core Informed Consent & Smart Core Waiver Forms by 6th grade • Smart Core is default program • Choosing Core could result in not qualifying for certain scholarships or unconditional college admission

  25. Common Core State Standards • Have been implemented in this school for 3 years • Is now fully integrated throughout district • www.commoncore.org • www.corestandards.org

  26. Title I • Our school receives federal and state funds to help assist our students. • The amount of money a district receives is determined by Free and Reduced Lunch Percentages. • How we allocate the money is determined through our Arkansas Consolidated School Improvement Plan. (ACSIP)

  27. Title I We use this money to help our students improve in literacy and math. • Paraprofessionals • Class Size Reductions • Technology • Programs • Materials

  28. Arkansas Consolidated School Improvement Plan (ACSIP) • All schools in Arkansas must submit their Arkansas Consolidated School Improvement Plan to the ADE each fall. • Our plan addresses Math, Literacy, Wellness, and English Language Learners. • Parent Involvement & Special Ed are embedded. • Includes objectives for improvement, professional development, coordination of funds, and program evaluation
