  4. A resolution is a formal request or action that is presented to the House of Delegates for consideration. www.asdanet.org

Parts of a resolution • Financial Impact: Cost (Staff can help) • Sponsors: Name, position, chapter of each sponsor (John Smith, Chapter President, Awesome Dental School) • Background: • Justifies need for your resolution and provides context for delegates • End with “; therefore be it” to lead in to your resolution

  21. Recent example • Resolution Number 303-2012: Resolved, that an Advanced Standing Program Liaison Position and/or subcommittee be created at the national level in order to benefit the organization at large over the coming years.

Policies and Positions E-9 Freedom to Invite Vendors/Speakers (2000) The American Student Dental Association encourages the administrators of all U.S. accredited dental schools to grant ASDA leaders the autonomy to select and invite dental supply companies and speakers to visit their school in order to heighten their knowledge and broaden their exposure to dental products prior to venturing into dental practice.

Resolution Number: 324RC-2010 Title: International Dental Outreach for Students Reference Committee Assignment: Governance & Professional Issues Sponsors: Nipa Thakkar (Alt Delegate) Temple University Addresses Strategic Plan Goal(s): #1: Effective advocacy for students and patients Board of Trustees Comments: Reference Committee Comments: The Reference Committee agrees with the intent of the resolution, but we believe the performance of irreversible procedures by non-dentists needs to be further evaluated with respect to appropriate standards in the best interest of patient care. Therefore, we would like the Council on Professional Issues to study the issue further before developing specific policy language.

RESOLUTIONResolved, that the Council on Professional Issues develop a policy regarding the performance of irreversible procedures by non-dentists, including but not limited to predental students participating in dental outreach programs; and be it furtherResolved, that the Council on Professional Issues and Governance present this policy to the House of Delegates at the 2011 Annual Session.Action: The Chair moves the substitution of 324RC-2010 for 324-2010, with a recommendation to adopt 324RC-2010 with a yes vote.House Action: Adopted by the House

B-8 Dental Outreach Programs (2010, revised 2011, 2012) Students in U.S. dental schools and predental programs who participate in a dental outreach program (e.g., international service trips, domestic service trips, volunteerism in underserved areas, etc.) are strongly encouraged: To adhere to the ASDA Code of Ethics and the ADA Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct; To be directly supervised by dentists licensed to practice in the United States or by faculty at a U.S. CODA-accredited dental school; To perform only procedures for which the volunteer has received proper education and training.
