Discover the comprehensive P2 curriculum at Bonnyrigg Primary School, grounded in Curriculum for Excellence, serving students aged 3-18. Curriculum for Excellence • The curriculum that we follow is Curriculum for Excellence • It runs from age 3-18 • P2 is year 1 of First Level • 8 Curricular areas – Literacy, Numeracy, HWB, Expressive Arts, Social Studies, Science, RME, Technologies
Numeracy • 3 numeracy lessons per week • There is a variety of teacher led activities, active group work and interactive games • Number facts revisited frequently • Numeracy skills are consolidated in the atrium
Maths • 1 lesson per week • Topics this year are 2D and 3D shapes, patterns, time, months and calendars, money and data handling • Focus on mathematical language and non-routine questioning
Reading • Reading homework will be given out on a Monday and will be taken in on Thursday • Children need their red bag everyday • Children will engage in reading activities as part of a rotation Monday to Thursday • Reading for enjoyment and modelling reading skills are a huge part of our classroom routines • Reading records for communication
Spelling • Throughout term one the focus was on revision of digraphs which will be continuously revisited throughout P2. We will be moving onto ‘magic e’ • Spelling is taught and children engage with activities Monday to Thursday. These aredifferentiatedto their needs • There is a focus on common words every week • Spelling homework will be a consolidation of what has been taught in class
Writing Writing is taught on a weekly basis with a focus on skills and children have the opportunity to apply these skills to independent writing every week. • Term 1 – Imaginative writing • Term 2 – Functional writing Specific focuses • Capital letters and full stops • Finger spaces • Applying spelling sounds into writing • Development of VCOP
Listening and Talking • We have been focusing on developing social skills and within that listening and talking skills. For example, quiet voices and listening and valuing other opinions • We have been working on applying these skills in the atrium
Atrium • Stations that support the learning and teaching that happens in the classroom • Skill based stations with specific purposes and they support consolidation of skills developed in the class • The atrium is also very important for the development of social skills
Routines • Can you please ensure all belongings are labelled. This includes jumpers, gym kits and gym rubbers • Money for school dinners should always be sent in a labelled envelope • Any tuck shop money should come in a labelled purse/wallet • Water bottles are to be filled with water only
Expectations • All children are expected to wear a jacket to school in the winter months • Earrings may be taped up or taken out for PE • Gym kits are to be kept in school from Monday to Friday • Can you ensure your child brings their reading folder to school every day
Good to be Green – High Expectations • We actively promote positive behaviour and set high expectations of all children throughout the school • This year we are reviewing our behaviour procedures • The positive approach benefits all learners and we constantly encourage good manners, politeness and a good attitude throughout the school
