  2. Description • In the Olympic Events of Luge, competitors race downa track of compacted snow and ice, in order to gain the shortest time • The sleds used are made for one, or two people • They lie down on the sled in order to gain more speed, and also for balance

  3. History • The Vikings are given the credit of inventing the sport of Luge • The first races were conducted as early as 800 AD • Luge is the French word for Toboggan • The first professional event was held in Davos, Switzerland, in 1883

  4. The event had a total of 21 people from Australia, Sweden, the Netherlands, England, Germany, the United States, and Switzerland (L-R) 2010 US Men's Team: Brian Martin and Mark Gimmette

  5. Dangers of Luge • Even though there are many barriers around the tracks, competitors may still crash because of the fast speeds they are going at • A Georgian competitor, NodarKumaritashvili, died before the 2010 Olympics in an accident • He was only 21 years old
