  2. The Beginning • The Luge started in St. Moritz, Switzerland in the mid 19th century. Luge became a sport in the Olympics in 1964. In 2000 Shane Legg was the first to win a gold medal in the sport.

  3. Artificial and Natural tracks • Most artificial tracks have specially designed banks and curves and are usually artificially refrigerated, but some may be naturally cooled. Natural tracks are formed out of pre-existing mountains and artificial banks and curves are not permitted. They are naturally cooled.

  4. Risks • There are many risks in the Luge competition. Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili was the latest death for the sport. In Vancouver, Canada he was in a fatal accident while practicing for the upcoming event. At least two athletes have died in the Luge since its beginning in 1964.
