LA Core 4 • 21 required units • 4 English • 4 Math • 4 Science • 4 Social Studies • 2 Foreign Language • 1 Art • 1 ½ Physical Education or JROTC • ½ Health • 3 Electives • Total = 24 units to graduate • All incoming freshmen from the year 2008 and beyond will be required to follow the Core 4 curriculum for at least the first two years.

LA Basic Core • 16 required units • 4 English • 4 Math • 3 Science • 3 Social Studies • 1 ½ Physical Education or JROTC • ½ Health • 8 Electives (must complete a career area of concentration) • Total = 24 units to graduate • Can not choose this option until student has attended high school for a minimum of 2 years • Must have meeting and written permission from parent to choose this option • Will not meet current 4 year college automatic admissions policies or TOPS The Basis Core diploma does not require: • a 4th Science or Social Studies credit • foreign language or speech • art

  5. Graduation • Students must earn 24 credits AND • Students must pass 3 end-of-course (EOC) tests in the following categories: • English II or English III • Algebra I or Geometry • Biology or American History

  6. Rank In Class and Honor Graduate • Rank in class is determined at the completion of senior year. Using criteria below the senior with most quality points will be number one in class. • Quality points earned in grades 9-12 • Calculated using maximum of 28 credits • Maximum of 16 credits may be weighted • Honor Graduate is determined by the overall weighted GPA which must be a 3.5 or higher.

  7. Credits • Should a senior fail a first semester class required for graduation, the alternatives are: • attempt to pass the course through Independent Study or on-line provider (costs approximately $150-$200 per .5 credit) • possibly reschedule class for second semester 2014 (not all courses are available; fees may apply) • repeat course in summer school and graduate at end of summer school (will not be allowed to participate in 2014 graduation ceremony) • repeat course next school year and graduate in May 2015 • Should a senior fail a second semester class required for graduation, the alternatives are: • repeat the course in summer school (cost approximately $150 per .5 credit). The student will be considered a 2014 graduate but will not participate in the graduation ceremony. • repeat the course next school year and graduate in May 2015

TOPS Louisiana’s Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) is a comprehensive program of state scholarships and one of the most innovative and progressive student assistance programs in the nation. TOPS pays the amount equal to base tuition at any Louisiana public college or university. TOPS and Financial Aid Application Process • Complete the FAFSA • www.fafsa.ed.gov • January 1, 2014 is the earliest that a student can apply • Submit by May 15th for priority deadline • Send test scores to TOPS - ACT code 1595 - SAT code 9019 • Missing or incorrect information can delay your award.

College Entrance Tests ACT or SAT • The ACT is an more of an achievement test, measuring what a student has learned in school. • The SAT is more of an aptitude test, testing reasoning and verbal abilities. • The ACT has up to 5 components: English, Mathematics, Reading, Science, and an optional Writing Test. • The SAT has 3 components: Critical Reasoning, Mathematics, Writing.

ACT • Approximate Cost: $36.50 or $52 for writing (fee waivers are available to 11th or 12th on free/reduced lunch see Ms. Canas) • Accommodations: Must be requested and approved through ACT (see Ms. Canas or Ms. Babin) • Registration: Visit www.actsudent.org for more details and to register.   15. College Visits • Each senior is granted two excused absences for college visits. • Letter from the university on their school letterhead including your name and the dates you visited. Bring to student services upon returning to school. • College visits count as field trips.

College Application Process The Application • Complete admission application online • Fees for application (may allow fee waivers for students on free/reduced lunch) • Be aware of deadlines • Secondary School Report/Letters of Recommendation • Always print a copy before sending • Send ACT/SAT score • Send High School and or College Transcript • Housing may be limited so apply early • Follow up in 2-3 weeks

  17. Transcripts • Go to student services for a transcript request form. • Fill out the transcript request form and pay the appropriate fee. • $1.00 for the first copy and .25 for each additional copy. Add .50 for each mailed copy. • All DE courses require an original transcript from the college where you earned the credit.

Collegiate Athletics NCAA or NAIA • All high school student-athletes wishing to compete in college must register with an Eligibility Center. • NCAA for Division I and II schools such as LSU, SLU, ULM, ULL, ect. • Register online with the NCAA Clearinghouse at www.eligibilitycenter.org • You must arrange for ACT/SAT to send your scores directly to the Clearinghouse. NCAA Clearinghouse code is 9999. • Complete a transcript request form in Student services to have your transcript mailed to the NCAA Clearinghouse. • NAIA Louisiana Colleges include Dillard, LSA-Alexandria & Shreveport, Loyola, Southern-New Orleans, and Xavier • Register online with the NAIA Clearinghouse at PlayNAIA.org.  • You must arrange for ACT/SAT to send your scores directly to the NAIA Clearinghouse. Clearinghouse code is 9876. • Complete a transcript request form in students services to have your transcript mailed to NAIA.

Check List • Select a College • Apply for Admission • Send your Test Scores and Transcripts • Apply for Housing • Athletes: Register with NCAA/NAIA • Never rule out a school because of cost alone. • Compare cost before applying: Net price calculators can give a clear picture of actual cost and are on the college’s webpage. • Remember to complete the FAFSA. • Some schools may provide funds through the CSS/Financial Aid Profile. • Get advice from the financial aid officers from the college and College Goal Sunday.
