  1. How have the politics of hegemony affected the Middle East? Who has the real power in the Middle East: foreign superpowers or Middle Eastern leaders / states / organizations? Which one is ultimately responsible for current problems in the Middle East? Has the UN helped or hindered in this regard? • Does arms proliferation promote peace or war? • Is the Age of Imperialism really over? Or has a neo-imperialism taken over?

  2. What is the nature of democracy in the Middle East? • Can revolutions achieve democracy? • What has been – what is – what should be… the relationship between religion and the state in the Middle East? • How has unity and division helped and/or hurt the Middle East in the past? Is the Middle East moving toward greater unity or greater division? To what extent do borders promote unity and/or division?

  3. How can interpretations of history (cause/effect – who’s responsible for current problems) cause current conflict? Can the development of a people / country / region be hindered by misplaced blame? • How does history define us in both positive and negative ways? How can the past be left behind but not forgotten? How can groups in conflict recognize the painful experiences of their history but still move beyond those experiences in the interest of a better, more peaceful future?
