  1. IRC Internet Relay Chat

  2. What is IRC? • IRC is a multi-user, multi-channel chatting system. Imagine sitting in front of your computer and "talking" through typed messages with either one person or many other people from all over the Internet, all in real time! Best of all, once you get set up, chatting on IRC is totally free!

  3. IRC • Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is one of the most popular and most interactive services on the Internet. • IRC is the net's equivalent of CB radio. But unlike CB, Internet Relay Chat lets people all over the world participate in real-time conversations. IRC is where the Net comes alive!

  4. Benefits Of IRC • Aside from meeting new people, IRC is also good for saving on phone bills, holding conferences or practicing a foreign language. • If you're in New York and your former college roommates are in Boston, Dallas and Seattle, you can make an IRC date, set up your own IRC channel and even use /NOTIFY to be informed when they log onto IRC so you can /INVITE them into your private channel!

  5. Client/Server Relationship • IRC is based on a client-server model. • You run a client program on your own computer which connects you to a server computer on the Internet. These servers link to many other servers to make up an IRC network, which transport messages from one user (client) to another. In this manner, people from all over the world can talk to each other live and simultaneously.
