  2. Definition • Shareable Content Object Reference Model • Collection of standards and specifications for web-based e-learning • Defines communications between client side content and a host system • Could be anything • Course • Chapter • Topic

  4. What is it actually? • Zipped file containing everything needed for the web-based delivery of content • HTML webpages containing Javascript • imsmanifest.xml • Everything listed in the imsmanifest.xml

How does it communicate? • Open a web browser • Launch the module from the LMS/TMS • The LMS/TMS sends back a webpage with information • SCORM API (Name, Scores, Bookmark, etc) • When you interact with the webpage, you are using Javascript to send information to the LMS/TMS • The LMS/TMS writes the information to its database

  6. How does it affect the developer? • Everything is fine until you start adding technology • Texts and graphics • Video • Audio • Animation • Simulation • Webinars • Streaming/Video-on-Demand • Virtual Environments

  7. What are you talking about? If you want to track or know the status of an object, you need to communicate with the JavaScript contained in the webpage. Think of the webpage as a building protected by a surveillance system with a set of instructions (JavaScript). If you put an object in the building and you don’t tell the system to add the object to the instructions, you can’t tell the LMS/TMS you want to track or know the status of the object. Not a problem if you DON’T want to track an object.

Experience Tracking • Experience Tracking: • Specifications and software that can be used to track learner data based on interactions with learning experiences. • Learning experiences can derive from many contexts, including formal courses, simulations, informal learning with websites and videos, games, and social media interactions. • Experience API (xAPI) • Learning Record Store

Experience Tracking • Experience API: • Store and track access to learning experiences • Enable tracking of learning experiences, including traditional records, such as scores or completion • Stores records of learner’s actions, like reading an article or watching a training video • Learning Record Store: • a system that stores the tracking statements communicated through the Experience API (xAPI) • validate and store incoming statements, then retrieve the data when queried • Learning activities using the xAPI generate statements in the form of "I did this" or "Actor verb object

Learner Profile Provides access to data about learners such as learner preferences and course history Information found in the profile can be used to tailor a learning experience to an individual by taking into account the learners specific style and experience within a subject Profile can be developed with data from many sources, including experience tracking and learner-entered information

  17. Competency Networks Enables learning objectives and competency definitions to be used by content and systems to establish proper relationships The relationships will map content/courses to objectives/competencies based on the established definitions
