  1. Do Now: What is a moon “phase”? How are they different from one another? Teaching Point: “To predict the phase of the moon based on its orbital position.”

  2. TP: “To predict the phase of the moon based on its orbital position.”Light Grows and Shrinks Waxing Phase- when the light on the moon appears to grow, until a full moon Waning Phase- when the light on the moon appears to shrink, until a new moon

  3. TP: “To predict the phase of the moon based on its orbital position.”Decoding the Moon Phase 1. Begin with your starting position Let’s start with location 5

  4. TP: “To predict the phase of the moon based on its orbital position.”Decoding the Moon Phase 2. Cut the moon in half making it half lit and half dark.

  5. TP: “To predict the phase of the moon based on its orbital position.”Decoding the Moon Phase 3. Draw a line up from the Earth pointing to the moon, and cover unlit portion of the moon.

  6. TP: “To predict the phase of the moon based on its orbital position.”Decoding the Moon Phase 4. Whatever is left is your moon phase! What is the moon phase here?

  7. TP: “To predict the phase of the moon based on its orbital position.” Class Activity Student 1:Create a visual display of what the moon would look like from Earth when its in positions: 1, 3, 5, and 7. Student 2: Create a visual display of what the moon would look like from Earth when its in positions: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7. Student 3:Create a visual display of what the moon would look like from Earth when its in every position.

  8. TP: “To predict the phase of the moon based on its orbital position.” Depth of Knowledge What evidence would you need to support the idea that the gravitational pull between the Earth and the moon is changing as the moon changes phase? Explain. Or The far side of the moon is often referred to as the “dark side of the moon” because it is always facing away from the Earth. It is correct to call the far side of the moon the “dark side”? Explain your reasoning.

  9. TP: “To predict the phase of the moon based on its orbital position.” Lesson Summary • What was the most important thing that you learned in today’s lesson? • Why is it important?
