The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program offers students specialized pathways to gain experiential learning and certifications in their areas of interest. This initiative, aligned with Ministry of Education standards, allows students to earn a prestigious SHSM Red Seal on their diplomas. To qualify, students must complete specific criteria during grades 11 and 12, including major and minor credits, co-op placements, and contextualized learning activities. Highland offers SHSMs in Manufacturing (CAD/CAM), Arts and Culture, and Information Communication Technology (ICT), fostering valuable skills and real-world experiences.

What is a SHSM? • A specialized pathway to engage students by giving them specialized experiences in their area of interest • Specific criteria to meet - set by the Ministry of Education • Students earn a SHSM Red Seal on their diplomas and SHSM Records of Activity • Students can enroll and if they complete at least half, they will earn a “Partially Completed” SHSM Record of Activity
Criteria to be Met During grades 11/12 • Major credits (2 per grade) • Minor credits (different for each SHSM) • Co-operative Education Credits ( 2 Co-op) • CLA’s (Contextualized Learning Activities) • Experiential Learning • Reach Ahead Opportunities • Certifications – paid for through the SHSM • Ontario Skills Passport
