  2. What is setting? • Setting is where a story takes place. It could mean the Era, Time period, Location. • Setting is important because it also helps include the : Theme and certain motifs. • It also sets the mood for the story. • Example: The Raven: The Mist:

  3. Brief summary of: Scarlet letter • For our power point presentation to be most effective, you’ll obviously need to remember the Scarlet letter. So we’ll help you out

  4. Hester Prynn • The letter A • Puritanism society • Adultery • Pearl

  5. Brief summary of: The Catcher in the Rye • To also understand our power point, you’re going to need to remember The catcher in the rye • So we’ll help you out, again.

  6. Holden • Pency Prep • The hooker named sunny. • His sister • …………………………………….. If none of those rang a bell to you, you probably didn’t read the book. But anyways, too the main point of this presentation!

  7. The setting of Scarlett letter • The woods/nature • Puritanism society • The town

  8. The setting of catcher in the rye • Pency Prep • The city life • The bars • The ghetto • The hotel • His home town/museum

  9. What do the settings mean? • Basically the setting pans out the whole story of the book, in a way that it makes sense for the time period. • The woods in a literal sense, is evil. That’s why Hester was banished there, but she found peace. • Holden, Left to the city. Where everyone is a phony and he tries to keep his adolescents.

  10. Effects setting has on character • How the Setting effects Hester Prynn • The town effects on hester • The woods effect on hester • Puritanism effect on hester • How the setting effects Nick • The Town effects on Nick • The hotel/city effects on nick • The home effects on Nick

  11. Effects Setting had on Story • The story behind the two books are deeply effected purely based on the setting, and more or less the setting of time. • The 1700’s-scarlett letter • 1970’s- Catcher in the Rye • The Woods/City life and how it effected the outcome of each story.

  12. A highly over looked topic is that, • Trends also come with the setting. And different trends can be seen compared between the novles. For example • Adultery • Loss of innocence • Nature
