  3. Samuel de Champlain been in the area since 1608 • John Cabot came in 1497 • England said that since Cabot had been there first, that they get the land • England won the dispute • English King gave land to William Penn because he was in debt

  5. William Penn was a Quaker (someone who is persecuted for their religious beliefs) • Set up the colony of Pennsylvania • He made the colony for people that were suffering from religious prosecution

  7. Many people followed William Penn • From Germany there was Lutherans, Mennonites, Amish, Monrovians • From Scotland and England Presbyterians • From Europe Jews and Catholics • Huguenots from France • 20% of population was slaves
