  1. AlgebraChapter 9: Polynomials and FactoringLesson 9-5 & Lesson 9-6: Factoring Trinomials Goal: Factor trinomials of the form ax2 + bx + c.

  2. Factoring Trinomials – Area Method • 1. Factor out any common monomial factors and write the remaining trinomial in standard form. Draw a box with four sections. Enter the first and last terms along a diagonal. • 2. Multiply the two terms. Find the factor pair of the product that has a sum of bx. (List all factor pairs.) • 3. Fill in the other two sections with the factor pair. Find the GCF of each column and row. A GCF is negative if both terms are negative. • 4. Write the binomial factors of the trinomial.
