What is An Action Plan? • “An official campus-approved plan or roadmap that PROPOSES a suite of activities designed to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions from campus operations by SPECIFIC dates.  It provides a comprehensive assessment of emissions-REDUCTION projects.  A living, flexible document that can be adjusted in light of new challenges, opportunities or scientific understanding.” - Daniel Press

  7. How much Co2 do we have to eliminate? • 14,851 metric tons by 2014 • Almost 25,000 metric tons by 2020 • These numbers are not growth adjusted

  8. Top Ten Recommendations • 1. Aggressively Implement Energy Efficiency Projects across Campus • 2. Setup of a task force to explore a replacement of an alternative energy cogeneration plant  • 3. Implement Solar Photovoltaic Projects on Campus.  • 4. Fund a Climate Change Budget raised by placing a modest fee on all air travel reimbursements.  • 5. How can you help! • Read the Climate Action Plan at steps.ucsc.edu if you don’t have that much time make sure to read the next steps and recommendations file. • Suggest comments and recommendations by sending an email to Climate@ucsc.edu • Send an email to the administration about what you are most excited about and support. • Hold the University accountable for the commitments we have made.

  11. Direct Action you can take now! Measure 28  Measure 38 • 2006 Student voted to buy REC’s to offset the energy consumption of UCSC campus • 100% renewable energy campus But are we? What does it represent?

  12. Renewable Energy Certificates • Purchase REC’s for .0016 cents per REC • 2007 purchased 57 million RECs at a cost of $91,200 • Actual cost can range anywhere from $50- $100 per CO2 metric ton when we pay only $36 per CO2 metric ton How is this possible? http://www.sterlingplanet.com/

Benefits • Reduces campus emissions • Students physical are able to see where their money goes. • Students have a say on how their money is spent. • 100% of the existing fee collected can go to projects • Internalizing our responsibility and taking direct action with our carbon footprint • No fee increase • Helps us reach our commitments (ACUPCC, etc.)
