  2. Main Idea The main idea tells you what the story is about. The main idea may be the lesson learned or moral of a story.

  3. What is the main idea? The main idea is the point of the passage without all of the details. The BIG picture.

  4. Supporting details The author’s main point is supported by details such as reasons and examples that back up the main idea. These are called supporting details. The supporting details are the things that describe the main idea.

Find the common bond among all the details of the passage. Compose a short sentence stating the bond and what the author says about the bond.

  22. Write out the main idea of the passage Niagara Falls is one of the most beautiful sights in North America. It is on the Niagara River halfway between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Niagara Falls is located on the American and Canadian border. The American Falls is 167 feet high. On the Canadian side, the Horseshoe Falls is 161 feet high.
