  1. Seven-Step Process (2.1) • Logical series of steps to identify and evaluate possibilities and to arrive at a good choice. • Define your needs & wants • Analyze your resources • Identify your choices • Gather information • Evaluate your choices • Make a decision • Plan how to reach your goal

Setting Lifestyle Goals (2.2) • Ways you spend your time, energy, & resources in the future. • Ask yourself a few questions. • What do you want to accomplish in life? • Do you want to raise a family? • Where would you like to live – house, apartment---city or country? • How would you like to spend your free time? • Do you want a high income or just enough money to be comfortable?

  3. Values • Beliefs & principles that you want to live by • Define who you are, shape your attitudes & choices, and help you identify your priorities (ex. Fame, family, health) • What is really important to you? Choose a career that matches your values. This can help ensure you like your work

  4. Six general values • Responsibility • Fulfilling obligations in a dependable & trustworthy way • Relationships • Work w/people you like or live near your family • Compassion • Caring deeply about people & their well-being • Courage • Ability to conquer fear & despair • Achievement • Being successful in whatever you do • Recognition • Want other people to appreciate & respect your accomplishments

  5. What are your interests? • Favorite activities • Identifying your interests can help you recognize whether you would prefer to work with… • Data, people, or things • These three categories can form the basis for describing different kinds of careers • Interest & aptitude assessment

  6. Are your goals realistic? (2.3) • Aptitudes & abilities • Aptitude – potential for learning & certain skill • Abilities - a skill you have already developed • Matching your aptitudes & abilities to careers • Your personality & learning styles • Personality – combination of your attitudes, behaviors, & characteristics. • Self-concept – way you see yourself • Learning styles • Verbal, logical, visual, rhythmic, kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalistic (see pg. 38) • Determining your personality type • Dominant, influencing, conservative, recessive
