  2. 2 guiding rules: • Most questions start out with: • What are . . . • How is… • What is… • Never frame your question so that it can be answered with a "yes" or "no". For example, "does the behavior therapy make a difference?"

Examples: • "What is the rate of assimilation for students with Educational Liaison? • What are the best peer-tutoring strategies? • How is peer-tutoring used in special education classrooms?“ • What are the "best practices" for behavior therapy for autistic children? • What effect does having an Educational Liaison have on record transfer for foster youth?

  4. Creating and Refining Your Research Question A good inquiry question contains information about the how (X), who (Y) and what (Z) of the action research project. The x, y, z factors

X Factor- action strategy • A counseling method: narrative therapy • Intervention strategy: peer mentors or • Training: presentation on a-g requirements for HS freshmen • Policy: new dress code • Some other change agent that you want to use. OR • The factor could be a classroom condition (e.g., gender or a particular student) that you want to study. You will be investigating the influence of your "action strategy".

  6. Y Factor -who outcome • You will be investigating the influence of X on whom? • "Y" involves subjects such as student(s), parent(s), teacher(s), administrator(s) and/or self.

  7. Z Factor- what outcome What will indicate that change has or has not occurred as result of implementing your action strategy? The " Z" factor also focuses on the desired outcome such as reading scores, attendance, reduced aggressive behavior, or stress reduction. As a result of employing "X" you hope you see a change of "something". The "something" is the "Z" factor.

  8. Example 1: What is the influence of using self-monitoring methods on Timmy's aggressive behavior to his fellow students? • X (action strategy/how) = self-monitoring methods • Y (subject outcome/who) = Timmy • Z (monitoring outcome/what) = aggressive behavior towards his fellow students

  9. Example 2 What is the effect of the Second Step Curriculum on the my 3rd grade students' recess conflicts? • X (action strategy/how) = Second Step Curriculum • Y (subject outcome/who) = 3rd grade students • Z (monitoring outcome/what) = recess conflicts
