  3. Characteristics • Shape: Coccobacilli (rodlike) • Gram Stain: Gram-negative(do not stain well) • Respiration: aerobic • Three Layers • An Innermost cytoplasmic membrane • Outer layer (resembles most membranes, fluidity) • Cell wall

Characteristics Cont’d. • If ATP is used, oxygen metabolized and consumed • “The basis for the obligate parasitism of these cells is that they require the rich cytoplasm to stabilize an unusually permeable cell membrane.” • Replication • Normally go through Binary Fission • If nutritional conditions are poor, growth ceases and rickettsia begins to grow long filamentous forms

  5. History • S. Burt Wolbach • Recognized it as an intracellular bacterium in 1919 • Proposed the name Dermacentroxenusrickettsii • Emile Brumpt • Felt that rickettsii belonged to the genus Rickettsia

Health Related • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever • Caused by Rickettsiarickettsii spread by Dermacentor ticks • Initial signs and symptoms of the disease include sudden onset of fever, headache, and muscle pain, followed by development of rash • Treated by antiobiotics • Require vectors for transmission • Transovarial transmission (Femaile tick passes on R. rickettsii to eggs)
