Larry’s Story • Larry was a good student. He did his homework, read a lot of books, and wrote quite well. • Unfortunately, he spoke so quietly in class that no one could hear what he was saying.
Larry Learns a New Strategy One day, Larry’s teacher asked him to speak much louder. She said to monitor, or think about, how he sounds and whether students are able to hear and understand what he was saying.
Larry Begins to Speak Louder It took practice, but Larry tried very hard to listen to himself when he spoke in class, and gradually he began speaking loudly and clearly. Everyone could hear what he was saying. They realized that he was very smart.
Loud Larry Helps Others • Some of the newer students asked Larry for help and he was happy to assist them. • The strategy of monitoring his language production improved his performance at school and made him more confident.
