DID YOU KNOW? 9625 3,4,and 5th graders scored level 1 or 2 in FCAT READING 1001 Students were retained in Grades 3, 4 and 5 in 08-09 after summer school. 9553 students in grades 2,3,and 4 are overage There are only 660 Elementary Dropout Prevention Seats for 1001 retained students and 9000+ students below standard.

OUR Charge… • Legislative Requirement: Florida §1003.53 Dropout prevention and academic intervention: (1)(a) Dropout prevention and academic intervention programs may differ from traditional educational programs and schools in scheduling, administrative structure, philosophy, curriculum, or setting and shall employ alternative teaching methodologies, curricula, learning activities, and diagnostic and assessment procedures in order to meet the needs, interests, abilities, and talents of eligible students. • Goal of DCPS STAR: To get overage students back on track with their grade level peers.

What we HAVE LEARNED from Research… • 4 out of 5 DCPS dropouts can be identified in SIXTH grade using these five key flags: • Level 1 or 2 in FCAT Reading • Level 1 or 2 in FCAT Math • Failing ELA • Failing Math • Excessive Absences • DCPS 9th grade dropout profile • Failed at least 1 Language Arts class, especially ENGLISH 1 • Failed at least 1 math course, especially ALGEBRA 1 Source: Learning to Finish

  7. 2010 – 2011 elementary recommendations REVISE LEARNING RECOVERY • Target failing grades and learning recovery in math and reading using Compass Odyssey REVISE S.T.A.R. (Students Taking Academic Responsibility) • Provide continuum of services for grades 2-5 at regional school sites • Provide a structured curriculum with • measureable outcomes • Increase time for learning

  11. STAR to MIDDLE SCHOOL Transition Purpose: • To advocate for the student the right team, teacher and schedule. Process: • Complete the transition packet on each rising 6thgrader • Send to Angela Wall, Student Advocate

Summer School focus • Eligibility- Any student who is enrolled into the 2010-2011 STAR program at: Normandy Village, Oak Hill, North Shore, Oceanway, or Finegan. • All other 2010-2011 STAR students may attend any other summer school program that appropriately meets their needs. • Purpose- 1. Extended School Year 2. Promotion • Curriculum- Compass Odyssey, Soar to Success, Fast ForWord • Accountability Measures- SDRT/SDMT (Stanford Diagnostic Reading/Math Test) Pre & Post Tests
