  1. Volcanoes Mount St. Helens By: Erin Kilban and Kerry Cote

  2. How and why volcanoes occur Volcanoes form from the magma rising and collecting into magma chambers. Then, the magma pushes itself through the surface causing the eruption. Volcanoes occur because of a previous earthquake causing one plate to sub duct under another plate, causing the magma to rise up. This happens at a convergent boundary.

  3. Where volcanoes occur Volcanoes form at the plate boundaries. They form when the plates spread apart, collide, or slide past each other.

  4. May 18, 1980… • 57 people died when this eruption happened • Erupted shortly after a 5.1 earthquake • 8:32 on Sunday morning • Mount St. Helens is located in the state of Washington • Biggest eruption from Mount St. Helens

May 1980 • After the eruption the landscape looked like desert • After the big explosion there were 17 smaller explosions • About 200 homes, 27 bridges, and hundreds of miles of road were destroyed. • Almost all of the wildlife in the area died • Several days after the explosion people wore masks to keep from inhaling dust • The explosion caused one side of the volcano to slide off • Hundreds of square miles turned into wastelands • Took over a billion dollars to fix the damage • It was six months before the city of Yakima was cleared of ash • Before and after the explosion there was months of little and big earthquakes
