  3. Business Background Dow Chemical is a world-wide leading supplier of plastic resins and material science innovations As of 2008 • Annual sales $57.4 billion • 46,000 employees worldwide • 150 manufacturing sites in 35 countries • Produce 3,300 different products

  4. Business Background • Dow Houston Operations located in Deer Park, TX • Complex covers 139 acres • Produces and sells more than 500 million pounds of product annually • Products are shipped via rail, truck, and pipeline • Employs more that 375 employees and contractors.

Business Need • Provide a business database to keep better track of incoming and outgoing shipments of raw materials and product • Keep track of the raw materials used in production of Dow’s products: • what vendors the product was purchased from • how it was delivered to the company (via truck, train, or pipeline) • how it was delivered to the buyer (via truck, train, or pipeline) • Determine the ROP based on flow of inventory per quarter • Sales information was tracked in a separate system. This database would be used by the traffic department.

Business Requirements • Traffic department employees • Able to locate specific shipment information • By date • By vendor • By product type • By transport type, etc… • Able to produce easily legible reports for site management • The company management • Restrict access to Traffic Department employees and company management only • Able to access it from any computer with a secure login

Business Value • Increased efficiency of traffic department by reducing lost paper orders and time spent searching through paper trails • Improved customer service by being able to quickly track order information • Improved reporting capabilities to management • Increase profit by reducing the number of wrong shipments

  9. Constraints • The new system should be in place and in use by January 2011 • Budget of $1B for development cost/time • Time required to import order history should be minimal hours with current traffic personnel.
