  2. If language is a social practice of meaning-making and interpretation, then it is not enough for language learners just to know grammar and vocabulary. They also need to know how that language is used to create and represent meanings and how to communicate with others and to engage with the communication of others. (Svalberg, 2007)

  3. Mistakes! Errori! To correct or not to correct, that is the question!

  4. Errors are a natural part of language learning. This is true of the development of a child’s first language as well as of second language learning. The errors reveal the patterns of learners’ developing interlanguage systems.

  5. These patterns will often coincide with the way the child learnt his/her first language. Therefore… it’s good news!

  6. Other things to keep in mind: • When we learn our first language we don’t learn to read and write it as well! • We only start being corrected when we are about 4 years old. • When we are older we tend to become self-conscious. • Italian grammar is complex.

  7. Correction • Excessive error correction can have a strong negative effect on motivation. • When learners are allowed to interact freely they learn each others’ mistakes. • Correction is necessary only if the error is repeated consistently. • At times the correction may take • place indirectly or at a more • appropriate time.

  8. Things we can do if we don’t speak or understand much Italian • The child can read a story out loud to us. • We can ask the child to tell us what the story was about. • Where can we get the books from? • Music! We can listen to a lot of Italian music (in the car maybe). • Where can we get the songs from? • Movies! We can watch cartoons in Italian. - Where can we get the songs from?
