  2. January 12, 1737John Hancock’s Birthday Best known as the Founding Father with the giant signature. Hancock (1737-1793) was an American merchant, statesman, & Founding Father; 4th & 13th President of the Continental Congress; and 1st & 3rd Governor of Massachusetts.

  3. January 12, 1773First Public Museum Is Founded The first public museum in America was established, in Charleston, S.C.

  4. January 12, 1777“Mission Santa Clara De Asis” Is Founded California mission built by followers of Father Junipero Serra to educate the Indians. In the 1850s the mission became Santa Clara University, the oldest university in California. The current building, used by the university as its chapel, is a replica of an older building that was destroyed by fire in 1926.

  5. January 12, 1959“Tamla Records” Is Founded Berry Gordy Jr. founded Motown Records (originally Tamla Records) in Detroit. Motown played an important role in the racial integration of popular music. In the 1960s, Motown and its soul-based subsidiaries were the most successful proponents of what came to be known as The Motown Sound, a style of soul music with a distinct pop influence.

January 12, 2010Haiti Earthquake The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake with an epicenter near the town of Leogane, approximately 16 miles west of Port-au Prince, Haiti’s capital. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake;the Haitian government reported that an estimated 316,000 people had died, 300,000 had been injured and 1,000,000 made homeless.
