  1. Optical Measurements (LiCor) & KD Values Briana Rice CHM 576 Fall 2009

  2. Outline • Measurements • KD Values • Significance • Effects • Depth vs. PAR Irradiance • KD vs. Turbidity • KD vs. DOC

  3. Measurements • LiCor sensor used for measurements • Scalar collector- measuring light from any direction • Blocked upward irradiance to measure in air • Measure irradiance at various depths

  4. KD Values • Diffuse attenuation coefficient in m-1 • Determined by inherent optical properties, but are strictly properties of the radiation field • Light attenuation is exponential with depth

  5. KD Value Effects • Larger KD value, light attenuated so does not reach as far • Varies with different water bodies • Scattering overcomes difference in beam angle (sunlight), so KD can be used to compare one water body to another • Varies with different water types • KD increases with increasing turbidity • KD increases with increasing DOC concentration

  6. Calculated KD Values (units m-1)

  7. ln (E0/Ez) vs. Depth (m)

  8. Cruise 1 (Station M42): Depth Plot for KD

  9. Cruise 2 (Station M42): Depth Plot for KD

  10. Cruise 1: KD Values vs. Turbidity

  11. Cruise 2: KD Values vs. Turbidity

  12. KD vs. DOC Concentration

  13. KD vs. DOC Concentration
