Background • January 18, 1894 – April 16, 2007 (23) • Immigrated to America 1992 (8) • Elementary School – Smart, quiet • Develops selective mutism (14) • Mother realizes he needs help - religious • Refused to talk at all in middle and high school • Intensely teased and bullied • Deemed an imminent danger to himself or others (21)

  3. Massacre • 7:15 a.m. April 16, 2007 Cho killed two students in a co-ed dormitory starting his spree • Crossed the campus to classrooms where he continued his attack shooting around 55 people killing 30 of them

  4. Package • Cho mailed a package in between killings • Contained video clips (25 min), photographs (43) and motives (23 pgs) • Unlike himself in the videos

  6. LiviuLibrescu • Professor of Engineering (20) who was teaching in Norris Hall at the time of the attack • 76 year old holocaust survivor • Barricaded the door with his body while Cho was trying to force his way in the door • Killed

Warning Signs • Cho’s relatives thought he was ill “didn’t mix well with other children” – uncle • High School – wrote an assignment about wanting to repeat Columbine, scribbled profane notes about how much he hated his school in his binder • Kicked out of freshman class at VT Nikki Giovanni, “mean streak, intimidating, menacing” • Involved in 3 stalking incidents of females at VT • Campus security told him to stop became suicidal • 2005 – found mentally ill after court mandated psychiatric evaluation, given outpatient treatment • The US secret service says that violent writings were the number one thing school shooters had in common

  8. Aftermath • Left a note in his room criticizing rich kids and their debauchery • Found Cho never went for treatment after he was ordered by a judge to do so in 2005 • Family issues an apology
