  4. Childhood • Born in October 28, 1955 in Seattle, Washington • Father – William H. Gates, a lawyer • Mother – Marry Gates, School teacher – University of Washington, and the chairperson of United Way International • Elder sister, Kristianne and younger sister, Libby

  5. “Growing up, my parents always encouraged us to read a lot and think for ourselves. They included us in discussions on everything from books to politics. In the summer, we’d go up to Hood Canal where our family and several other families who gathered there every year would play a lot of competitive games – relay races, egg tosses, Capture the Flag. It was always a great time, and it gave all of us a sense that we could compete and succeed.”

The Step To The Business World • In November 1975, Gates and Paul Allen introduced the gigantic name: “Microsoft” • Found a basic operating system called DOS with the blend of BASIC “I can visualize the source code to the vision of BASIC that I wrote for the first microcomputer, back in 1975. That was the programming code that got Microsoft started, so maybe it’s no surprise that I can still see every detail of the first page, the second page, the third page – as if they were in front of me.”

  13. Contract with IBM • Gates was 25 years old and Microsoft had only 32 employees • In 1980, signed a contract with International Business Machines (IBM) to develop an operating system for its personal computers • Hereafter many computer makers used DOS and Microsoft became a success
