  4. Why river linking project in India • The total geographical area of the country is 328.7 million hectares, • The gross and net irrigated area is 85.8 million hectares and 60.9 million hectares respectively, • Production of food grains during 2009-10 is estimated at 216.85 Million Tones (MT) • 234.47 M.T. achieved during 2008-09

  5. Why river linking project in India • Deficit rainfall during the south-west monsoon season affected Kharifagricultural operations during the current year, with paddy suffering the most adverse impact. Despite the timely onset of the south-west monsoon during • 2009, the monsoon remained weak and erratic during the major part of the season. At the end of the south-west monsoon (1 June, 2009 to 30 September, 2009), there was an overall deficit of 23 per cent in rainfall.
