  1. Mayflower Compact: The History of the Pilgrims and the Mayflower Answers to the Questions

  2. 1. The Mayflower Compact:a signed agreement to ensure peace between the 2 groups carried by the Mayflower ship to America. It was our first governing document.

  3. 2. When the document was signed, James I was the King of England.

  4. 3. The significance of the Mayflower Compact is that it contains extremely important concepts that helped to shape the History of America.

  5. 4. A compact is a word used to describe a signed written agreement, contract or covenant between two or more parties.

  6. 5. Separatists were a group of Puritans who advocated total withdrawal from the Church of England.

  7. 6. Separatists were also called Pilgrims, Saints and Puritans.

  8. 7. The Separatists obtained a land patent from the London Virginia Company. It allowed them to settle at the mouth of the Hudson River.

  9. 8. Separatists paid for their journey to the New World by obtaining a loan from the Merchant Adventurers who were looking to make a profit. They had to repay them.

  10. 9. The Separatists changed boats because their original ship, the Speedwell, needed repairs.

  11. 10. Saints and Strangers were the names given to the two groups of people on the Mayflower.

  12. 11. The Strangers were: not motivated by the prospect of religious freedom wanted to MAKE MONEY they were “common people” Not close family units Tradesmen, craftsmen, skilled workers, laborers, indentured servants and young orphans

  13. 12. The Saints were the Separatists, a close society, less tolerant, did not welcome other/different points of view, Their main motivation in making the journey was establishment of a colony in which they would have religious freedom.

  14. 13. There were many reasons this was a difficult journey. Some of the reasons included: tensions among the two groups, overcrowding on the ship, a shortage of supplies, and bad storms.

  15. 14. The main reason for outrage on the Mayflower was that the “Saints” insisted that their religious practices be followed by all of the passengers and crew.

  16. 15. The “Strangers” aggravated the “Saints” with their intolerance of the beliefs of the “Saints.”

  17. 16. The people of the Mayflower got back on and sailed again because the area on which they landed was not suited for settlement.

  18. 17. The Mayflower passengers were trying to sail to the state of Virginia.

  19. 18. The state the Pilgrims settled in was MASSACHUSETTS.

  20. 19. Not settling at the original location meant they were on land that was not England's and that England had no legal right over them.

  21. 20. The Saints faced problems because they were isolated and without constraints. They were particularly worried about total chaos and anarchy happening in the new settlement if they did not talk strategy.

  22. 21. The SAINTS started the talks between the two groups.

  23. 22. The two groups realized, because of their present situation, if they didn’t work together they would all die in the wilderness

  24. 23. The indigenous population the Saints and Strangers were worried about were INDIANS.

  25. 24. The type of document the pact had to be was FORMAL and BINDING.

  26. 25. The Mayflower Compact was similar to the agreements used by the Separatists to establish their churches.

  27. 26. It was similar to the Separatists church documents because it did not have any contentious elements (language) in it.

  28. 27. The Mayflower Compact was short because they believed that shorter documents meant smaller disagreements.

  29. 28. The signers of the Mayflower Compact served as the initial government of the colony by electing a governor, enacting laws and admitting others to membership.

  30. 29. They named the colony Plymouth Plantation after they signed the compact.

  31. 30. The Mayflower Compact served as a model for our US Constitution.
