  9. 1st Quarter of school year English Overview • Use letter sounds to read and write unknown words, inventive spelling (jolly phonics) • Recognize and spell high frequency words • Write simple sentences with a focus on punctuation and neatness. Draw pictures to explain ideas. • Establish good reading habits: choosing just right books, tracking print with finger • Establish decoding strategies to solve new words: sounding out words, breaking words apart, looking for smaller words in big words, looking at pictures • Begin to retell stories they read and/or hear with a focus on “First…Next…Then…Last”

  10. 1st quarter of school yearChinese Overview • Use decoding strategies to help reading Pinyin and establish read for understanding. Reach reading Pinyin fluency through daily frequent practice. • Spell Pinyin correctly when hearing the sound. • Is able to write short sentences to express feelings and ideas by using Pinyin and taught characters. • Recognize about100 Chinese characters by writing their Pinyin and explain their meanings. • Write about 30 characters in their correct stroke order. • Is able to use the taught characters to make sentences. • Acquire daily language through speaking class.

  11. 1st quarter of school yearMath Overview • Establish daily counting routines (ones/tens) • Begin to use the 100’s chart to count by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s • Establish calendar routines • Learning numbers and number words to twenty • Understanding fewer than / more than • Practice number ordering and number patterning • Practicing addition concepts

Homework • English Homework Schedule Homework Packet (Comes home Monday – Due Friday) * please help your child by reading the instructions with them, and checking their homework packet before Friday Home Reading (Every Night – Please initial each day and send back to school each day) • Chinese Homework Schedule

  13. READING AT HOME • It is very important that parents are involved in reading with their first grader at home! • Your child should be reading and listening to stories every night with a parent. Talking about the books is an important factor for improving comprehension skills. It is OK to stop during reading to discuss any questions your child may have, or make predictions about what may happen next. • Reading the same book more than once is good for fluency and comprehension. Your child needs to feel successful reading at their level in order to grow and develop as a reader. • Please read the Reading at Home “Guide for Parents” for suggestions on how you can help with your child’s growth as a reader.

  14. Spelling Test • English – The students will be tested on 10 words and 1 simple sentence every Friday. Practice writing should be completed on the back page of the Homework Packet every week for spelling practice at home. • Chinese – Spelling words from Chinese text book will be given as homework throughout the 6-day-cycle. The test will be on every Day 1 for 1A and every Day 2 for 1B. Spelling on our backs! Spelling with friends!

  16. Schedule • Please arrive at school no later than 7:55 AM. Coming to school on time sets the tone for the school day. Flag raising will take place in the courtyard at 7:50 on Monday mornings. • After school, children will have snack in the classroom from 3:10-3:20. After snack, you can pick them up at the end of the PYP hallway. If you are not there to meet them in the hallway, they will go to the canteen with their class where they can sit at the tables and work on Homework until you pick them up.
