Greening of Industries • Ensuring that all industries, regardless of sector, size or location, continuously improve their resource productivity / resource efficiency. • Aimed at reducing the environmental impacts of processes and products through using: • Use resources more efficiently; • Phasing out toxic substances; • Substituting fossil fuels with renewable energy sources; • Improve occupational health and safety; • Taking increased producer responsibility, eco design of products • Reducing the overall risks of production.

  3. Green Industry Green Industries • Includes industries with core business activities focused on the provision of environmental goods and services, such as: • Waste management, recycling and resource recovery; • Manufacturers of renewable and energy-efficient technologies and equipments; • Providers of environmental advisory, analytical, monitoring and other services; • Including providers of cleaner production services; • Manufacturers of clean and/or pollution control technologies and equipments.

  4. Key Features of the Platform • Purpose • Multi-stakeholder framework with a focus on Green Industry. • Action-oriented Platform. • Goal • To promote measurable progress towards Green Industry; • To scale up of the Green industry concept/approach • To ensure that the emerging Green Industry Revolution is given the policy profile and coherence it deserves. • Functions • Help bring together existing data resource bases on GI; • Web-based portal to share information on relevant policies, technologies and developments. • Exchange Best Practice, lessons learned

Structure & Governance • Structure • The Platform’s structure, thematic priorities, work programme and budget will be decided upon by UNIDO and partner UN bodies, and with the counsel of an Advisory Board. • Advisory Board • Chaired by the Director-General of UNIDO; • Comprise 10-12 top senior representatives from Government, industry and civil society around the world; • Members invited to serve for 2 year term; • Secretariat Services to the Platform will be provided by UNIDO and UN partner bodies; • Work Program and Schedule of the Platform will be determined by the Board.

  6. Engagement & Participation • Signatory Eligibility • Voluntary global multi-stakeholder framework . • Open to signature by the Chief Executive/Head of Organisations from the public, private and civil society sectors with an interest in advancing Green Industry. • Nature and Scope of Commitment Membership will be expressed through the signature of a Statement of Support to Indicate: • Public support for the platforms objectives; • Engagement to promote the Green Industry principles within their organisations and with others in the manner that they judge most appropriate; • Share information and ideas on their experiences and achievements. • Membership • Free of charge. • Signatories may incur a level of costs associated with the form of participation they choose(Participation in meetings, internal investments costs associated with innovation, promotion costs, etc.)

  7. Funding • The platform will operate as a non-profit body. • It will require funding support for core operations from donors. • Start-up costs will initially be covered by UNIDO budget and with support from donors. • The exact financial model and requirements will be decided by the Advisory Board. • The current proposal is to have: • Two separate budgets, modest in size and not intended to take the place of government or private market investment in specific manufacturing activities: • For Secretariat, meetings and structural activities; • Research and baseline studies, project and program design

Timeline • Interim Advisory Board • Provide guidance on the optimal governance structure for the Platform; • First meeting onThursday 3rd May 2012 in Vienna, Austria. • Formal Launch • Formal launch will take place during the RIO+20 Conference, Windsor Barra Hotel, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,Saturday 16thJune 2012. • One of three UNIDO Side Events during Rio+20: • Resource Efficient and Enterprise Competitiveness - Fostering Cleaner Technologies and Technology Transfer • Launch of Green Industry Platform • Green Chemistry • Members of the Interim Advisory Board and UN partner bodies will be invited to the launch.
