International Masters degree on Spatial Data-Infrastructures In November 2006, CLGE was invited to send a delegation to Malta to assist the Task Force by holding a round of discussions with a number of the relevant Maltese stakeholders. International Masters degree on Spatial Data-Infrastructures • The CLGE delegation submitted a report in April 2007 which recommended a two pronged approach to address the challenges ahead, including: • To establish an SDI Task Force to identify and prepare a list of strategic projects and goals for implementing a national Spatial Data Infrastructure for Malta; • To establish an Educational Task Force to prepare outline course documents for masters’ and bachelors’ degree programmes for surveying in Malta.

  5. International Masters degree on Spatial Data-Infrastructures The A second meeting was held between the Maltese Task Force, the CLGE delegation and the University of Malta in October 2007. This meeting focussed on the proposal to develop a masters degree in Spatial Data Infra-structures and suggested that the masters programme should be: §A collaborative venture led by University of Malta (UoM) with Aalborg University, Denmark (AAU) and Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland (DIT) as collaboration partners. §Offered at international level, since Malta’s population of circa 400,000 may not be large enough to supply sufficient student numbers for programme viability.

International Masters degree on Spatial Data-Infrastructures The University of Malta indicated its preference for a full time MSc for 13 months (September to October) with 90 ECTS, and a minimum of 15 students to ensure the programme is economically viable. A fee of circa €12,000 per student was proposed; It is undecided as yet whether students would spend one semester in each of the three locations or whether the programme would be delivered in Malta with guest lecturers from AAU and DIT, or if lectures could be delivered from home using video conferencing, and awards would be given from UoM alone or a combined award from the three collaborating organisations.

  7. International Masters degree on Spatial Data-Infrastructures The University of Malta proposed organising a summer school for Spatial Data Infra-structures in Malta for summer 2008 to assess the market need for the masters’ programme.

  8. Course Course objective • The objectives of the summer school is to provide professionals and graduates with an understanding of the role of Geographic Information in today’s society and the importance of Spatial Data Infrastructures in managing geographic information. • It will provide participants with the necessary knowledge and tools to engage in effective decision-making by learning how geographic information is collected and used, and its increasing relevance in society and administrations. • Reference is made to GIS related technologies and the concepts and issues related to spatial data, and the recent publication of the INSPIRE directive in Europe pre-empting the setting up of Spatial Data Infrastructures.

  9. Structure • The Summer School will run over a period of two weeks. Participants will engage in the course for 5 hours a day for 10 days. Lectures are held between 0900-1200 and 1400-1600 (except for fieldtrips, fieldwork and site visits). A written test will be held at the end of the course. • The course will be held at the Old University Building in Valletta.

  10. Certification Upon successful completion of a written test, participants will receive a formal Certificate issued by the three participating institutions. The course is equivalent to 3 ECTS units.

  11. Faculty The course benefits from the experience of three institutions. The academic faculty will be a mix between local, Maltese academics coming from the ICT faculty, the Geography Programme at the Mediterranean Institute of the University of Malta and the local industry, Foreign lecturers from the Department of Spatial Information Sciences of the School of Spatial Planning at the Dublin Institute of Technology, and The Division of Geomatics of the Department of Development and Planning at Aalborg University.
