Peter Tchaikovsky(1840 - 1893) • Peter Tchaikovsky is one the most celebrated Russian composers of all time. • He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression across the world. • Two of his most famous compositions are Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. • Swan Lake was based on Russian folk tales and tells the story of a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse. • The Nutcracker is a magical Christmas story where a toy comes to life and a young girl is taken on an exciting and mysterious adventure.
Anna Pavlova(1881 – 1931) • Anna Pavlova was a Russian Empire ballerina. • She is one of the finest classical ballet dancers in history. • Anna Pavlova is most recognised for a short ballet called the ‘Dying Swan’ in which she danced the last moments in the life of a swan. • Anna Pavlova became the first ballerina to tour ballet around the world. • In 1912 Anna Pavlova moved to London, England. • While in London, Pavlova helped develop British ballet.
ValentinaTereshkova(1937 - ) • Valentina Tereshkova is a retired Russian astronaut and the first woman in the world to have flown in space. • She piloted the Vostok 6 into space in June 1963. • Valentina Tereshkova wasn’t in the armed forces and therefore also became the first civilian to fly in space. • During her three-day mission, she performed various tests on herself to collect data on the female body's reaction to spaceflight. • Tereshkova orbited the earth 48 times during her three days in space. • Valentina Tereshkova is a Russian hero.
Dmitri Mendeleev(1834 – 1907) • Dmitri Mendeleev was a Russian chemist and inventor. • He created the first list of pure chemical substances known as elements. • Some examples of elements are oxygen, aluminium, iron and copper. • This ‘list’ of elements is known as the Periodic Table. • Mendeleev also predicted some elements that were yet to be discovered. • One of the craters on the moon is named after Mendeleev.
Ivan Aivazovsky(1817-1900) • Ivan Aivazovskywas a painter. • He was born and mainly lived and worked in the Crimea (currently territory whose ownership is disputed by Russia and Ukraine). • His parents were from Armenia (then part of the Russian Empire but now an independent country). • Ivan Aivazovsky spoke Armenian, Ukrainian and Russian. • He was most famous for his seascapes. • Aivazovsky is considered to be one of the greatest seascape painters of all times. • Aivazovsky’s portrait has been printed on the stamps of 3 countries: Armenia, Ukraine and Russia.
