  1. Settling the Gap Rising Tuition Costs at UTEP

  2. Why do Tuition Costs Rise? • Public institutions are heavily funded by subsides • States distribute the funds, which are collected taxes, on a priority basis • If, for example, the state gives more funds to K-12 there are less funds for colleges • Therefore, if funding drops tuition rises

  3. Advantages Raising UTEP tuition from the point of view of the school

  4. Advantages • Usually when paying higher tuition, you are paying for better teachers and their salary • If students pay higher tuition they will be less likely to “coast” and more likely to strive for good grades • Higher tuition allows for students to use facilities and services for no charge • UTEP’s goal is Tier 1 status

  5. Disadvantages Rising tuition at UTEP from the point of view of the student

  6. Disadvantages • Creates an added stress to the student • Students will more likely be in debt • Some of the added cost are for athletics, which most students are less concerned with • There are a lot of other costs such a books that put more strain on a student

  7. The Solution To rising UTEP tuition costs

  8. Solutions Have a meeting with students and faculty to discuss all issues and clear the air Hopefully, settle on a reasonable increase for both parties Research what organizations or programs can handle and sustain a budget cost Rally UTEP students, teachers, organizations, and clubs to search for more private funding to help deter the cost to students
