Economic Characteristics • Base = Agriculture from subsistence to commercial farming (rice paddies) • Industry= high-tech industry & manufacturing (China; Hong Kong; Japan) • Rural vs. Urban Areas • Increasing global markets beginning in 1950s up to the present • Many industrializing countries • ASEAN= Economic Group (similar set up to NAFTA and the African Union)

Human Impact on SE Asia • What do the hillsides look like in Vietnam & Thailand? =Hills cut into type of farm called “terraced farming” (looks like stairs or terraces) • What is happening to the forests in Nepal, Malaysia, & Indonesia? =Deforestation • What are some major transportation routes? =railroads & rivers used with increasing pollution problems

  12. Historical Significance • Dynasties in China & Japan • Communism in China & Indochina (Vietnam; Laos) • Conflicts over territories • Conflicts over resources • Colonialism & Expansion esp. the BRITISH!!!

Factors of SE Asia • Pagoda; Torii Gate; only “true” Technological country: Highly industrialized even with minimal natural resources= Japan • “The Silk Road” & The Great Wall= China • Many cities grew up along the Silk Road= Kashbar, Samarkand, Xi’an, Beijing (later) • Tents (yurts) & “mobile” homes= Mongolia • Current Events: China; Japan; Korea
