  1. GREEN IT

  2. Green IT is basically the use of computers and IT technology in an environmentally sustainable and efficient way • Putting environmental sustainability into IT • 850 million computers worldwide

  3. Green IT can be separated into three separate sections: • Energy efficiency • Smaller monitors are more efficient than larger ones  • Most laptop computers use about 15-60 watts • Desktops use between 65-250 watts

  4. Recyclability • Recycled paper, recycled inker cartridges • Biodegradability • Reducing Toxic E-waste>>Mercury and Cadmium

  5. Benefits • Conserves energy • Reduces costs, particularly with large corporations • Saves money • Reduces carbon pollution • Helps the environment • Helps discover alternatives technologies • Creates more environmentally friendly products

  6. How to be GREEN with IT • One computer to a household • Sharing computers and printers • Turning off your monitor and computer when not in use • Using recycled paper • Recycling of computers/proper disposal of computers • Alternatives to computers

  7. Company Initiatives • Hewlett Packard • Energy and sustainability management • 5 step plan to Green Computing • Develop a sustainable green computing plan • Recycle • Make environmentally sound purchase decisions • Reduce paper consumption • Conserve Energy

  8. Disadvantages • False advertising of green devices leading to more air pollution. • High initial cost leads to reluctance over adopting green methods. • Technology not readily available • Performance quality sacrificed • Small bothersome tasks. (sharing the one computer, using recycled paper)

  9. Energy Star Products • If all computers sold in the Australia met ENERGY STAR requirements, the savings in energy costs would grow to $1.8 billion each year, reducing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from more than 2 million vehicles. • An ENERGY STAR qualified computer delivers substantial savings over a conventional computer.

  10. EPA has strengthened the requirements for computers earning the ENERGY STAR in Version 5.0. For Desktop and notebook computers, products must meet TEC (total energy consumption) requirements for estimated annual energy consumption.Small-scale servers must meet energy use guidelines in ‘off’ and ‘idle’ modes of operation, and thin clients supporting sleep functions must meet requirements in this mode as well.

  11. If every home office product purchased in Australia this year met ENERGY STAR requirements, we would: • Save more than $100 million in annual energy costs • Prevent 1.4 billion pounds of greenhouse gases, equivalent to emissions from 125,000 cars • Save more than 900 million kWh of electricity

  12. Energy Star Products cont. • Power management is important to saving energy, especially since computers are often in use more hours per day than they used to be.  • ENERGY STAR power management features place computers into a low-power "sleep mode" after a designated period of inactivity. • Activating power management features on an ENERGY STAR qualified desktop delivers lifetime energy savings that can go a long way towards paying the cost of a new computer

  13. Damn, should have unplugged my monitor…

  14. SAVE ENERGY!! Don’t you just hate it when someone turns you on and just leaves
