  2. We can all benefit from a healthier lifestyle Why? A faster paced lifestyle with more fast food and less time for physical activity 62% of Missouri adults & over 66% of American adults are overweight or obese (CDC, 2004).

  3. What additional obstacles are there for people with serious mental illness? • Psychiatric symptoms • Medications • Living situation • Limited resources • Limited opportunities

  4. End result…higher risk Increased Risk of Cardiovascular Disease Increased Risk of Diabetes Higher Rate of Obesity Increased Rates of Substance Abuse Decreased Life Expectancy

  5. Benefits of a Healthy Lifestyle • Longevity • Healthier life • Increase in daily activities • Improvement in life satisfaction & self-esteem • Decreased depression and anxiety • Cost savings

  6. How can we help motivate for lifestyle change?

  7. Understand the Stages of Change • Not Ready for Change (precontemplation stage) • Thinking about Change (contemplation stage) • Preparing for Change (preparation stage) • Taking Action (action stage) • Maintaining a Good Thing (maintenance stage)

  8. “Not Ready for Change” • Plant the seed • Ask how their life would be better • Convey that change is possible • Use relationship to encourage change • Timing is everything

  9. “Thinking About Change” • Maximize the ‘pros’ • Minimize the ‘cons’ • Help identify personal reasons for change • Provide encouragement through enthusiasm

  10. “Preparing for Change” • Assist with developing realistic goals • Encourage starting with a small change • Assure a successful experience • Anticipate problems • Suggest using a ‘buddy system’

  11. “Taking Action” • Make it a top priority • Pull out all the stops • Find supportive people to turn to • Take it one day at a time

  12. Maintaining a Good Thing • Watch for relapse • Consider ‘slip-ups’ as ‘opportunities to learn’ • Encourage friends that offer support for change • Find support meetings • Celebrate success

  13. So, steps to change…. • Resolve ambivalence • Ramp up will-power • Think ahead • Do it • Keep doing it

  15. How can we help? Exercise • Provide education • Give ideas on ways to increase physical activity throughout the day • Encourage fun competitions that involve activity • Assist in obtaining scholarships

  16. How can we help? Nutrition • Provide education on nutrition basics • Support the 5-A-Day Campaign • Run fun competitions that encourage weight loss • Post nutrition information on menus • Provide healthy food choices • Encourage smaller portion sizes

  17. How can we help? Stress management • Provide education on recognizing stress • Teach stress reducing activities • Encourage finding a peaceful space for relaxation

  18. Wellness Coach Model • 3rd grant funded by MFH • Focuses more on community support, rather than the wellness center • Each member can choose a “wellness coach”

  19. Final Thoughts Wellness can be contagious Set your own wellness goals Share your goals with others Support can come from surprising sources Help build an environment that supports wellness
