Unknown #2 • Physical Property experiment: We believe as a group that unknown #2 is ammonia • We are using density to test our assumption. • The known density of ammonia is 0.73 kg/m³. • We found our unknown had a mass of 32.32g we measured about 30mL • Using the formula D = M/V we got the answer 0.93 g/mL which is similar to the known value. • Density is an intensive property.

  3. Unknown #2 3 physical properties we observed: • 1. Strong unpleasant odor (intensive) • 2. Has a clear color (intensive) • 3. Low viscosity (intensive) Ammonia is a pure substance.

Unknown #19 • Physical property experiment: We as a group agree that unknown #19 is copper. • We are usingbuoyancy to test if we are correct. • It is known that copper does not float. • We tested this by putting the copper in a measuring cup and observing what happened, as expected the metal sank. • Buoyancy is an intensive property. 3 Physical properties we observed of unknown #19: • Easy to bend and flexible (intensive) • Copper coloring (intensive) • Has the appearance of a metal (intensive) Copper is a pure substance.

Unknown #6 • Physical property test: We as a group made an assumption that unknown #6 was a mixture of soap and water. • We will test to see if we are correct by observation of viscosity of unknown substance #6 compared to water. • It is known that water and soap have low viscosity. • Viscosity is an intensive property.

  8. Unknown #6 • 3 Physical properties we observed of unknown #6: • White/cream colored (intensive) • Smells like soap (intensive) • Low viscosity (intensive) Unknown #6 is a mixture.

Unknown #5 • Physical property experiment: We agree as a group that unknown #5 is water. • We are using density to see if we are correct. • The known density of water is  1,000.00 kg/m³  • The mass of unknown #5 is 13.2g and we measured 12.9mL • Using the formula formula D = M/Vwe got the answer 0.98g/mL which is extremely close to the known value of water. • Density is an intensive property. 3 Physical properties we observed of unknown #5: • Clear color (intensive) • Low viscosity (intensive) • No odor (intensive) Water is a pure substance.

Unknown #13 • Physical property experiment: We agree as a group that unknown #13 is salt. • We are testing to see if we are correct by using solubility. • We put unknown #13 in a measuring cup of water to see if it would dissolve, as we expected it did. • Solubility is an intensive property. 3 Physical properties we observed of unknown #13: • Grainy texture (intensive) • No odor (intensive) • White coloring (intensive) Salt is a pure substance.
