  2. Aspen View Academy – History • Founded in May 2011 by a core group of parents & community members • Core Knowledge curriculum and structure chosen based on community input and surveys • Conditional Approval received from BOE on 12/13/11 • Our Mission: • Aspen View Academy will succeed through academic excellence in a challenging and stimulating environment that emphasizes math, technology and language arts enabling our students to become critical thinkers, responsible citizens, strong community members and future leaders. • Our Vision: • We recognize that an education is incomplete without fostering the arts, sports, nature, and character. Together, with our students, faculty, parents and community, we will develop civic and personal responsibility, intellectual passion and differentiated instruction in a safe, orderly & nurturing environment. • Core Knowledge Education with emphasis on Character Education through R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Program

  3. Character Education Program RESPECT - Showing high regard for an authority, other people, self and country. Treating others as you would want to be treated. R = Responsibility: Being honest and accountable in word and deed. Having a sense of duty to fulfill tasks with reliability, dependability and commitment. E = Empowerment: We believe children must be equipped with the ability to make good decisions independently of adults. By internalizing the habits and behaviors that demonstrate responsibility, they will be empowered to lead successful, productive lives. S = Sharing: Developing a willingness to share knowledge, experiences and time to enrich learning, give back to the community through school projects and constantly seek ways to improve through continuous input and feedback P = Patience: We strive to develop Aspen View students with a level of perseverance and diligence that will instill the confidence needed to succeed in whatever endeavor our students undertake E = Excellence: Striving to do the best in everything you do, while maintaining a positive attitude and a spirit of self-confidence C = Compassion: Caring in action. Treating others with kindness, generosity and a forgiving spirit. T = Teamwork: We will create an atmosphere that fosters collaborative and team-focused success to enrich our students and prepare them for high school, college and a collaboration driven marketplace

  5. Current situation & Immediate Goals • Aspen View Academy has completed Building Concept Design with Hutton Architecture Studios • As of May 7th, 479 student equivalent intent to enrolls forms received • 68% of current Intent to Enroll forms come from The Meadows • Completing General Contractor (GC) RFP process and selection on 5/9/12 • Working with LRP and Bill Moffitt to ensure building and facility standards are being met to match useful life with COP term • Aspen View Academy will continue to partner with the District to ensure we minimize District risk while protecting the District’s credit rating and providing flexibility and opportunity to steer charter school development • Building a new Charter School in Castle Rock is imperative to meet planned future growth and offset existing over-capacity in the Meadows schools (elementary and middle school) • Comply with DCSD Enrollment Preferences for COP Partnership Schools

  6. Programming & Approach • Aspen View Academy will open for 2013/14 school year to accommodate PreK-6 (approx. 600 students) • Aspen View Academy will grow: • 7th grade in 2014/15 • 8th grade in 2015/16 • Complete build-out and enrollment will be 85,00/SF & 900 students • Building concept plans call for 3-story building with a total of 75,000/SF for 2013/14 opening • Allows for 7th grade expansion in 2014/15 without physical building expansion • Will require building expansion to accommodate 8th grade in summer of 2015 • Working to value engineer components of construction process that are deemed non-invasive in the event the District needs to take over Aspen View Academy (i.e. can be converted during summer break)

  7. COP Fund Request • Overall Building Plan: • 75,000/SF build-out year one • This allows for expansion in 2014/15 for 7th grade without major addition/construction • Will require additional construction prior to 2015/16 to accommodate additional middle school expansion • Value engineering only minor components to comply with LRP minimums and suggested guidelines • COP Fund request: • $12,500,000 (details included in Total Project Budget spreadsheet) • Includes an estimated $800,000 reserve for 1st year payments • Additional funding options/sources: • CDE Startup grant $600k+ for Years 1-3 • Highmark School Development • Charter Stone Capital • Fundraising Goal – Year 1: $25,000

  8. Land, Location & Build-out Options • Site concept design currently under review by Town of CR • Working with Town of Castle Rock to ensure smooth and seamless flow between school and adjacent park while minimizing neighborhood traffic impact • Next steps: • Town of Castle Rock to review site concept • Traffic impact to kick off no later than week of 5/21 • Soil & Geo tests to kick off on later than week of 5/21 • Schedule and deliver neighborhood impact meeting with Castle Rock Development Corp no later than 6/1/12 • Continued awareness through local town and community events • June 30, 2012 – Construction contract signed • Town Council review and approval process
