  5. What’s the Issue • Crime in the neighboring area (Census Track 21) is up 138% to 46 crimes per 1000 in 2006 vs. 2005. (Note: 82% vs. 2004) • Two known issues: • Local: People from neighboring communities use the MP recreational facilities, and also cut through the neighborhood in vehicles (two shootings in 2007) • Distant: The neighborhood has been targeted by distant organizations for auto theft and burglary. (88% increase in auto thefts in 2006)

  6. What to do? • Ask East Palo Alto PD and Palo Alto PD to get involved. This issue can not be resolved only within the context of MP. • Change MPPD policy on dispatch in Beat 2 . • My understanding is that current policy is to dispatch 2 officers to Beats 1 and 3 and only 1 or two officers to Beat 2 (includes The Willows) • Beat 1 (West of El Camino) • Beat 2 (El Camino to 101) • Beat 3 (East of 101)

  7. What to do? • Institute some traffic calming measures to further reduce cut-through traffic through the Willows. (in particular from North to South) • Increase MPPD headcount as requested. • My understanding is that MPPD has asked for additional in order to staff a motorcycle patrol focused on traffic issues. • Create a strike-force to deal with the vehicle theft issue. (Include state and federal authorities as needed)
