Professional Development Workshops in March 2014 NJ Birth to Three Early Learning Standards Overview Wednesday, March 12, 2014 6:30 - 8:30 pm Cost: FREE Angie DeFazio, Instructor Intended for use by families, child care providers, early childhood teachers, people in the community, and policymakers, The New Jersey Birth to Three Early Learning Standards provide a common framework for understanding and communicating developmentally appropriate expectations for infants and toddlers. These standards are based on research about what children should know (understand) and do (competencies and skills) in different domains of learning and development. This workshop will introduce the goals and framework of The New Jersey Birth to Three Early Learning Standardsand discuss their intended use to best support quality curriculum, instruction and assessment in early care and education programs. ** Attendance is recommended, if there is no prior knowledge on this topic, for participation in the upcoming Series of 5, Putting The New Jersey Birth to Three Early Learning Standards into Practice. In this workshop, we will explore Vivian Gussin Paley’s Storytelling/Story Acting approach that is both simple and powerful. By recognizing and encouraging children’s narrative and then providing a way for their ideas to be “visible,” children gain literacy and language skills as well as developing a sense of belonging and community. Language/Literacy focus will be highlighted. CPR and First Aid Tuesday, March 11, 2014 7:00 - 10:00 pm Cost: $45 Frank Hines, Instructor Participants will learn child and infant CPR techniques, relief of obstructed airway in the responsive victim, use of barrier devices, and pediatric medical emergencies. Participants will be trained in the immediate care needed for an injured or seriously ill child. This basic program will concentrate on the first five minutes of care, what to do, and how to do it. Completion course card included. *Payment of $45 is due no later than March 4, 2014*

A Special Event from Save the Children: Emergency Preparedness Wednesday, March 19, 2014 5:00 - 9:00 pm Cost: FREE Child Care Emergency Preparedness is designed to help child care providers develop and implement robust emergency plans that cater to the specific needs of their program. The course teaches participants best practices in evacuation, relocation and family re-unification. The curriculum also provides guidance for practical applications to improve overall emergency protocol. Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to identify hazards and risks at their child care site, create a written plan that addresses the emergency needs of their program, and communicate, practice, and update their emergency plan on a regular basis.
