  2. Lincoln- Douglas Debates • Lincoln would challenge Douglas to debates between Douglas and himself in seven of nine states. • Defining event in American politics. • Began to define sharp differences between the North/South, Republican/Democratic, and Lincoln/Douglas.

  3. Different Speech Styles • Abe Lincoln • delivered his comments solemnly • Using direct plain language. • Sense of Humor • Quick wit • Stephan Douglas • Self-confidence • Pacing back and forth • Using his fist to pound home his points.

  4. All the candidates • Northern Democrats: Stephan Douglas • Popular sovereignty • Southern Democrats: John C Breckinridge • Former Vice President • Constitutional Union Party: John Bell • Former Know-Nothing/Whig Party • Ignored slavery all together. • Republican Party: Abe Lincoln

  5. The winner is….secession? • Lincoln would win the election, but only by electoral votes, not popular vote. • Seceding: Formal withdraw • Who would be the one that would start the withdrawing? Guesses?

  6. States that secede • South Carolina first on December 20, 1860. • Mississippi next on January 9, 1861. • Florida seceded the next day. • Within the week; Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas seceded.

  7. The new nation • Would be called The Confederate States of America. • President: Jefferson Davis Coming Soon to a nation near you! THE CIVIL WAR IN 3D!!!!!!!!
