  7. 8th Grade English • Students read and respond to classical & contemporary texts. • Concentration on the persuasive essay. • Students apply the conventions of standard English.

  8. 8th Grade Reading • Personal choice selections. • Use of book clubs, literature circles, visual literacy. • Projects include book reviews, multi-media presentations. • Students will also develop reading for information skills and reading to perform tasks.

  9. 8th Grade Math Program • Algebra 1 - limited enrollment - students who have successfully completed Pre-Algebra in 7th Grade • Pre-Algebra

  10. 8th Grade Earth Science • Includes study of volcanoes, earthquakes, erosion, soil formation, meteorology and astronomy.

  11. 8th Grade American History • Industrialization – Modern America; units covered include development of U.S. and WWI, the Great Depression and WWII, post war U.S., the contemporary U.S. • Study skills emphasized include historical thinking, analysis of primary source documents, research skills, timeliness, persuasive writing.

  12. World Languages Spanish 1 Spanish 2 French 2 • Second year - Successfully complete level 1 of language. • College-bound students will need an additional 2-3 years of a foreign language on the high school level. • REQUIRES FULL YEAR COMMITMENT W/ NO OPTION OF DROPPING COURSE.

  13. 8th Grade P.E. Program • Mandatory PE Fitness Test • Activities include football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, dance, jump rope, fitness, floor hockey, handball and track and field. • Track and Field meet against RPMS in June. • Research essays, performance tests. • Appropriate dress in uniform colors and sneakers.

  14. Performing Arts Classes • General Chorus • Concert Choir (by audition) • Band….performs at 8th Grade Awards Assembly. • Jazz Band - meets after school, one day a week. • Orchestra

  16. 8th Grade Sample Schedule • 8 period day • 5 periods for core academic classes • English • Reading • Math • Social Studies • Science 1 period for P.E. 2 days per week AND OPTIONS FOR OTHER 3 DAYS: • Chorus • Band • Orchestra • Concert Choir (by audition) 1 period for FOREIGN LANGUAGE OR EXPLORATORY ARTS 1 period for Lunch

  18. High School Registration • Meet with DHS counselor in February 2013 to conduct high school registration • Discuss future high school opportunities • Other high school options: • Henry Abbott Technical High School • Nonnewaug • Private Schools

  19. Washington D.C. Trip • Criteria for attending: • Any student failing 2 or more subjects for the year is excluded. • Behavior Requirements • 3 nights/4 days; one day in Philadephia • Cost to be determined • Mr. Primini- Trip Coordinator
