Introduction - What is Skype 2.0 for iPhone? • Based on VoIP clients(Voice over Internet Protocol) – following the footsteps other iPhone VoIP clients such as Fring and iCall. • Skype 2.0 for iPhone is an app that let you use the Skype service to send instant messages and make voice calls for free to other Skype users, and to make low-priced voice calls to cell-phones and landlines around the world.

What is VoIP client? • VoIP is transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications over IP networks such as the Internet or other packet-switched networks. • Frequently referred as IP telephone, Internet telephone, and Broadband phone. • Internet telephone refers to communication service that are transported via the internet, rather than the Public Switched Telephone Network(PSTN) • Basic steps • Conversion of the analog voice signal to digital format • Compression/Translation of the signal into Internet Protocol (IP) Packets • Transfer IP packets through Internet • Reversed process at the receiving end

  5. What is the catch? • Skype’s 3G calling is only on a trial basis for now. • In early 2011, the VoIP company will levy a “Small monthly fee”. (The amount of which remains undecided for now.)

(Cont) • By charging for calls, Skype is setting itself up for two things; • Forcing a 3G subscription plan leverages a value proposition for international callers only, (Foreshortening domestic callers) • Pushing callers to subscribe for Skype’s service may encourage callers to user other services, like Fring. (Fring even has ‘two way video calling feature’ – a feature Skype 2.0 for iPhone does not have.)

  7. Conclusion – Does it worth it? • Skype 2.0 for iPhone does worth it when you make international calls over 3G if you already have existing Skype subscription. • Skype-to-Skype calls over Wi-Fi remain free.
