  3. WHAT DOES THE EXPRESSION “LANGUAGE OF LOVE” MEAN? The languageof love is the way we express ourfeelingsto the personwe love. The languageof love embodiesthreemaincategories: • The sonnet, a poeticformoriginated in Italy in the thirteenthcentury a poem of fourteenlines with a specificstructure; • The tragedy, a particularformofdramabased on humansuffering; • Anyotherformoflyricpoetry.

  4. WHY IS DIFFICULT TO EXPRESS EMOTIONS? Expressingouremotionsisreallytough, because we are scared to knowtheloved.edperson’sresponse. We are scared to be rejected, so weoften refusetodeclareour love.

  5. WHY DO PEOPLE CHOOSE TO USE POETRY TO SPEAK ABOUT LOVE? • Poetry is a form of communication that allows the writer to express messages in an artistic way; • Poetry can touch people’s feelings and mind.

  6. HOW DOES POETRY TOUCH THE READER FEELINGS? • Through the reader’sidentification in the poem; • By usingspecificstylisticchoice (metaphor, simile, …)

  7. COURTING DURING MIDDLE AGES • Courtingwasexclusively a male’s function, itwasnotaccepted for a woman to court a man; • The “languageof love” hadreligiouspurposes; • The knightguaranteedhisservicesto the lady and shewouldn’t returnhimcarnal love.

STAGES OF THE COURTLY LOVE According to Andreas Cappellanus,’s “De Amore”, therewerespecificphasesof the process of Love: • The process of love startedfrom eye-contact with the woman; • The worship of the lady from afar; • The declaration of passionate devotion; • The raising of the woman figure; • The virtuous rejection by the lady; • Heroic deeds by the man, whose level is increased by the presence of the lady; • Consummation of the secret love; • Endless adventures and subterfuges avoiding detection;

  9. COURT NOWADAYS Nowadays the act of courting is generally a male’s function, even if there are many cases where the woman courts the man. The most common court forms are: • Speaking directly to the girl to show her one’s involvement; • Sending text messages;

  10. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TODAY’S COURTING AND THE MEDIEVAL ONES • During the Middle Ages Courting was necessarily a male’s function. Nowadays things have changed. • The medieval language of love had religious purposes, nowadays it concerns physical standards; • The courtly satisfaction wasn’t given by carnal love. • Medieval love usually elapsed between people who belonged to the same social class.
