Prior to the 1800’s Europeans controlled little land in Africa • Traders and explorers visited and traded but did not stay • Slavers either captured Africans or bought them from locals in West Africa • In the 1800’s, Europeans conquered large parts of Africa and established colonies • Between 1884 and 1885, the major European powers met at the Berlin Conference to make rules for dividing Africa • Wanted to prevent a European war • Africans were not invited
