  1. EMODNET Preparatory Actions Hydrographic and Seabed Mapping Exploring INSPIRE Compliance By Dick M.A. Schaap – Coordinator Brussels - Belgium, October 2011, MODEG Meeting

  2. Hydrographic portal - services • A metadata discovery and access service that gives clear information about existing hydrographic survey data sets, their access restrictions and distributors; this is implemented by adopting the SeaDataNet CDI data discovery and access service that also includes a shopping mechanism for requesting access to basic measurements data. • A Hydrographic data products viewing and downloading service for viewing the various layers of the Digital Terrain Model including options for downloading the DTM in tiles in various formats. • The DTM is produced using basic survey data sets (single and multibeam surveys) that are referenced in the DTM cells via the CDI service. In addition composite DTMs have been incorporated. These will be referenced in the DTM cells via a DTM metadata discovery service. This is under construction.

  3. Hydrographic portal http://www.emodnet-hydrography.eu CDI metadata service Under construction DTM metadata service Data products service

  4. CDI Data Discovery and Access Service • Giving information about survey data sets and a shopping mechanism • for requesting access to these data sets. If ok, access is provided by downloading.

  5. Hydrographic Data Products viewing service • Page with pull down menu with GIS layers and options for viewing and requesting extra information; inset Gulf of Cadiz

  6. Hydrographic Data Products viewing service • Downloading DTM grid as tiles in various formats (CSV , ESRI ASCII, NetCDF (CF), Geotiff and Fledermaus SD files)

  7. INSPIRE compliance: CDI Data Discovery and Access Service

  8. INSPIRE compliance: DTM Metadata Service (under construction)

  9. INSPIRE compliance: Data Products Viewing Service

  10. INSPIRE Annex I, II, III spatial data themes • Annex III • Statistical units • Buildings • Soil • Land use • Human health and safety • Utility and governmental services • Environmental monitoring facilities • Production and industrial facilities • Agricultural and aquaculture facilities • Population distribution – demography • Area management/ restriction/regulation zones & reporting units • Natural risk zones • Atmospheric conditions • Meteorological geographical features • Oceanographic geographical features • Sea regions • Bio-geographical regions • Habitats and biotopes • Species distribution • Energy Resources • Mineral resources Annex I Coordinate reference systems Geographical grid systems Geographical names Administrative units Addresses Cadastral parcels Transport networks Hydrography Protected sites • Annex II • Elevation • Land cover • Ortho-imagery • Geology

  11. INSPIRE – ELEVATION – ANNEX II • D2.8.II.1 Data Specification on Elevation – Draft Guidelines (D2.8.II.1_v2.0(.4) • The Elevation data theme includes digital elevation models for land, ice and ocean surfaces both for terrestrial elevation and bathymetry, as well as shorelines • The default encoding is GML. Gridded land and bathymetry elevation data is encoded using a GML Coverage. • 9.2.1.2. Default encodings for application schema Elevation – Coverages • Format name: Elevation Land GRID/DTM GML Coverage, GML Application Schema • Version of the format: 1.9, GML, version 3.2.1 • Recommendation 20 When using the external file format version for the range set in GML coverages, these should be encoded by means of binary file formats that are commonly used within the geographic community. For example GeoTiff, Tiff or JPEG2000 (without lossy compression).

  12. INSPIRE – ELEVATION – ANNEX II • D2.8.II.1 Data Specification on Elevation – Draft Guidelines (D2.8.II.1_v2.0(.4) • 9.2.1.2.2. Water GRID/DTM • Format name: Elevation Water GRID/DTM GML Coverage, GML Application Schema • Version of the format: 1.9, GML, version 3.2.1 • Recommendation 21 When using the external file format version for the range set in GML coverages, these should be encoded by means of binary file formats that are commonly used within the hydrographic community. For example Bathymetric Attributed Grid Object (BAG), version 1.0. This is the Geospatial Standard for hydrographic data S-102 of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO)

  13. Conclusions • The majority of the services and used formats in the EMODNet Hydrography portal are already INSPIRE compliant • Upgrading of CDI to ISO 19139 transport scheme is underway as part of SeaDataNet II project • Use of external vocabularies is allowed. => SeaDataNet Common Vocabularies will be proposed to INSPIRE via SeaDataNet SDIC for various themes • The Delivery of bathymetric survey data sets is done in NetCDF (CF). This is not excluded but not yet named in the INSPIRE Elevation specification. => Will be proposed to INSPIRE via SeaDataNet SDIC • For the delivery of the DTM tiles prresent formats are allowed, but it seems recommended to support also the Bathymetric Attributed Grid Object (BAG), IHO S102, once this is mature
